Brain health facts

What is brain health?

A healthy brain helps you solve problems, communicate, and pay attention.1 Changing brain health is a natural part of aging. An individual with changes in their brain health may notice their memory or mental functions have slipped, but the changes are not severe enough to significantly interfere with the individual’s usual activities or daily life. However, brain health changes may also put an individual at risk for Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.2

Risk factors for changes in brain health include:3

  • Physical inactivity
  • Tobacco use
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Excess use of alcohol
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • Depression
  • Social isolation

Signs and symptoms of changes in brain health4

An individual may exhibit the following signs and symptoms of changes in brain health:

  • Forgetting things more often
  • Forgetting important appointments or dates
  • Losing their train of thought
  • Losing the thread of conversations
  • Feeling overwhelmed when needing to make decisions, plan steps for an activity, or understand instructions
  • Having trouble finding their way in familiar environments
  • Becoming more impulsive

How Intuition is hoping to impact brain health

This virtual research study will collect information from many people of different ages and backgrounds, as well as those with and without risk factors for changes in brain health. The study aims to use this information to identify digital biomarkers to help measure thinking and memory in adults, as well as identify longer-term changes in brain health. Changes in brain health may occur normally as we age, while others could be an early indicator of certain forms of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s disease. This study, therefore, may be an important step toward better understanding how to maintain and improve brain health throughout our adult lives in a number of different ways.
